This two-day, hands-on class is an Introduction to 5-axis machining.  Students will use Fusion 360 and Camplete TruePath to program and machine parts on a HAAS UMC-750.

Curriculum:

CAD & CAM & Verification Software:

  • Fusion 360 Setups & Templates for 3+2 & 5-Axis machining
  • 3+2 CAM strategies, tips & tricks
  • WCS setup & Probing
  • Simultaneous 5-axis CAM Basics
  • Simulation in Fusion 360 for basic collision detection
  • Verification & Simulation in Camplete Truepath for comprehensive collision detection

Machines, Tooling, Tool Holders & Workholding:

  • Basics of 5-Axis Machine Tools
  • Considerations when evaluating and purchasing a 5-Axis Machine
  • Discussion of options and accessories: probing, chip management, coolant options, coolant management, automation basics, lights-out considerations
  • Discussion of Cutting Tools and Tool Holders for job shop, production, flexibility, and tool library
  • Overview of workholding products and strategies, including vises, dovetails, quick-change / zero-point system, and custom fixtures

Hands-On:

  • Hands-on review of workholding and tool holdings
  • Day 1: students will program and machine a basic 3+2 part on the HAAS UMC-750
  • Day 2: students will program and machine a 3+2 and simultaneous 5-axis part on the HAAS UMC-750
